About the Black Food Fund.
The Black Food Fund is a new organisation providing local grant funding. Based in Lambeth and Southwark. Led by and for Black people.
We’re passionate about our communities' lives and health. Our work focuses on providing grant funding to local work focused on transforming the food system in Lambeth and Southwark. We’re aiming to improve Black food equity and health in the area where we work and live. Ultimately, this fund seeks to acknowledge, celebrate and promote the intrinsic value of our own knowledge systems, practices and food.
We are looking to distribute £450k of grant funding.

Yes the current round of funding is open now. The current round of funding closes at 12pm on Thursday 11th September 2025.

In this current round, you can apply for up to £25k. There is no minimum.
Each grant will last for 12 - 18 months.

To apply we ask that you are:
centring Black African and/or Caribbean research, knowledge and cultures and traditions.
Living, working or doing a lot of work within Lambeth and/or Southwark.
deeply embedded in local Black communities.
invested in supporting local food equity and health over the long term.
Black-led, meaning 75% of the leadership team and decision-makers are:
Black African
Black British
Black Caribbean
or of Mixed Black Ethnicity.

We welcome applications from anyone named in the ‘who can apply’ section.
Within this we are not able to fund anyone:
those not working or doing the majority of their work in Lambeth and/or Southwark
anyone who is currently receiving grant funding from Black Food Fund
anyone who is currently a trustee for Impact on Urban Health.

directly related to any of the Black Food Fund Directors.
directly related to the Black Food Fund admin and facilitation team.
whose work does not offer any public benefit to the community.
who cannot be paid this funding into or does not have a UK bank account.

Please note: you do not need to have a company or charity or CiC to apply. You only need to agree to pay any eligible taxes to HMRC.

The Black Food Fund is led by a group of directors. They are Akwasi, Candice, Gaye, Kemi and Veronica, a group of Black community leaders living and working in Lambeth and Southwark. You can find out more about them here.

The Black Food Fund is funded by Impact on Urban Health. They are a grant funder focused on health equity in Lambeth and Southwark.

The fund is facilitated by Tayo Medupin, a researcher and designer, and Daphne Amevenu, a social impact consultant.

There are no restrictions on what your funding can be used for. As long as it is used to further the aims of the Black Food Fund and as agreed with the committee.
This means that you can apply and use funding for:
project costs (including new projects, existing projects, research, design or delivery etc.).
core costs (including overheads, staff costs, rent, energy and utilities, insurance etc.).
capital costs (including buying and updating physical assets like buildings, equipment or technology etc.).
and anything in between.
NOTE: In line with Charity Commission guidelines and agreements with our funder, there are some prohibited uses (e.g., fraud, terrorism) which we’ll share with all successful grantees.

For those seeking funding for PhDs, our primary concern is that the research is exploring a topic that centres Black African and Caribbean knowledge and practice to advance food equity and justice.
The funding can be used to support anything that will enable you to do the PhD including tuition fees and stipends for your living costs.

We want to support work that supports people of Black heritage, part of the African diaspora. This includes those who identify as Black from countries in South America.
